Aikido, Japanese: 合気道  Is a modern Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba, commonly known as O’Sensei or Great Teacher.  O’Sensei’s juxtaposition of his martial studies, philosophy, and religious beliefs resulted in the Art called Aikido.  Aikido is often translated as, “the way of unifying” or “the way of harmonious spirit.”  O’Sensei’s goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury.

Aikido,  is a traditional Japanese martial art and spiritual path.  O-Sensei studied classical samurai martial arts and disarming techniques including but not limited to: judo, ju-jitsu, daito-ryu, ken-jitsu, and spear.  Over a period of 50 years he incorporated many of these techniques into the arts that we practice today.

Aikido is the unique combination of kindness of heart and the path of the warrior; Martial, and Art. Aikido training is not perfection of a step or skill, but rather improving one's character. One becomes "resilient" inside yet this strength is expressed softly. Movements found in nature are efficient, rational, and soft, while the center is immovable, firm and stable. This principle of a firm center expressed by aligning one's character with the center expressed throughout nature.  Aikido movements maintains the firm and stable center with an emphasis on spherical rotation characterized by flowing, circular, dance-like motions. These pivoting, entering and circling motions are used to control and overcome the opponent.  Although Aikido movements are soft, rational, and smooth as in nature, by applying a bit of force these can become devastatingly effective. The gentle quality of Aikido makes it appealing to men and women and children regardless of age.  After Morihei Ueshiba's passing in 1969, his son Kisshomaru Ueshiba  was inaugurated as Aikido Doshu.  At present, Moriteru Ueshiba, grandson of Morihei Ueshiba, has succeeded his father as Aikido Doshu.
